As Snow Falls

It is the 20th century in California and the main character, a woman, has lived her life to the fullest. Nestled in her favorite spot during a snow storm she recalls the events of her life from her earliest memories of resisting birth and losing that futile battle to finding her true love and their beautiful family. There are monkey wrenches thrown in at every turn as she struggles to find her place; demonic teachers, cliquish students, her nightmare job, a love lost, and an earthquake that threatens her family. Life continues to dismay her until she can’t take it anymore and sets off on a journey. She is a lost soul with no destination, a wandering heart until something happens, something so incredible she could have never imagined it! Through her harrowing and dark story she finds light, justice and true love. She is a humble and lovable character who is quite ordinarily extraordinary. Her story is anyone’s story.

Excerpt:

Jacob had grown into a very handsome young man. The girls adored him. He was quite a lady’s man from an early age. Having an older sister, he was used to the attention he received from her and her friends. They always thought he was adorable, and they mooned all over him. When he was twelve, one of Natalie’s friends, a cute blond girl with bright blue eyes, fair skin, and rosy cheeks, had the biggest crush on him. He had a crush on her as well. He wasn’t shy around girls at all, and when they flirted with him he flirted back. Anyway, Nikki found him and the girl kissing in the backyard one Saturday afternoon. As Reese tells it, Nikki went white as a sheet, her eyes rolled up into her head, and she almost fainted. He had to catch her to keep her from hitting the ground. He thought it was hilarious, but Nikki kept a very close eye on Jacob after that. I don’t think she let him out of her sight for more than thirty seconds at a time. He was a very good-looking boy and charming, and the girls couldn’t keep their hands off him. They chased him everywhere. I knew one day, when he found the right girl, she wouldn’t be chasing him. He would be chasing her.

This is a character interview with Storm:

In the book you mention your father’s nickname for you, Storm, and manage to keep your given name illusive. May I ask what is your given name? I prefer to be called Storm.

1. What is it about the mountains that makes them so appealing to you?

I love the fresh mountain air and the feeling of complete privacy. The cabin has always been our escape and a place that I feel most at home. And the views are breathtaking.

2. You and Coby have a wonderful marriage. What is the key to your success?

Love first. We grew up as well. When we first married we travelled the world looking for new adventures. The excitement kept us busy if you know what I mean. After Reese was born it was time to grow up, make a life and I stopped being so hot headed, maybe the change in hormones. My best advice, always keep your marriage fresh and the doors of communication open.

3. How difficult is it to run a business?

It is a lot of hard work! Luckily for us, we were just taking over an already established business, but we had to keep it afloat. Between Cobie and I, mostly me; I ran the office and took care of the finances, we managed to make it succeed. Cobie’s always had a knack for building and repairing. His honesty and skill helped the business grow. Word of mouth is the best and cheapest advertising. Recently, Reese and Nikki have taken over and truly me the shop flourish.

4. In your youth you were very much a free spirit as you embarked on your journey. What fears did have, if any?

I was a child in my twenties. I had no fears. I went where I managed to pick up rides or get cheap bus tickets. I really penny pinched as I knew my savings wouldn’t last forever. My journey was something I had to do. I didn’t exactly know why. It was like a compulsion and when I saw Cobie in that diner I suddenly knew why. He was my pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, so to speak.

5. Reese grew into a fine young man. Do you have any child-rearing advice for parents?

Again love first. In a family there can never be too much love. Children are easy when they’re young because they automatically love you. Once they turn into teenagers, watch out! Suddenly they have spikes and claws and realize their parents aren’t the entire world. We always made time for Reese and supported his endeavors.

6. During your journey you experienced a hurricane. How frightening was that?

It was scary. The wind blew and howled all night. I really thought the roof of the motel was either going to fly off or come crashing in on me from a fallen tree.

7. Is there anything else you would like to add?

I have lived many years and survived a gang load of experiences. The one thing I learned throughout all of it is be true to yourself and kind to others.

spring

spring, joyous season

with flowers, in rain-shed sun,

chill is gone and done

birds chirping, scatter and run,

splashing, mud puddles, so fun

mountain spring

mountain spring

so beautiful and gentle

tinkling down

so amble

moving forth, as to drown

my wailing cry

of a broken heart

please do not deny

as we depart

from this earth

and to reign in heaven

that our love was worth

and we were chosen

to love not deceit

angel sings of

music so sweet

as doves

symbol our love

so beautiful and gentle

tinkling down

so amble…

moving forth, as to drown

their cries, of bells to ring

to hear such sound

at the mountain spring

Awake

I awake with clouds of gray

Hanging over this head of mine

Skies are gloomy, sad looking

Upon my face

It feels if there is no way

To make the sun shine

Or to hear the birds sing

Searching for God’s grace

At the end of the day

Hoping God will give me a sign

Just a small ping

If it is only to embrace

When I bow my head to pray

Knowing His love is divine

He will take this aching

Heart and replace it

I can say

That today will be fine

And the birds will sing

The clouds will erase

And the sun will shine

Upon my face
